 H.E. Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al-Issa , Secretary-General of the Muslim World League (MWL) and Chairman of the Organization of Muslim Scholars, delivered a keynote address at the opening of a high-level meeting of the Expert Group at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.
His address focused on the importance of activating religious dialogue in a way that builds bridges and moves beyond repetitive discussions and recurring themes.
His Excellency emphasized that the MWL’s effective and impactful dialogues have followed two tracks:
The first: within the Islamic sphere, encompassing all Islamic schools of thought and traditions. This led to the Charter of Makkah and the Charter of Building Bridges Between Islamic Schools of Thought and Sects, both of which have been commended by the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). In particular, the OIC recommended benefiting from the Charter of Makkah in religious, cultural, and educational institutions across the Islamic world.
The second: between the Islamic world and others. This resulted in the “Building Bridges Between East and West” initiative at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and the “Protecting Global Youth from Extremist and Violent Extremist Ideologies” initiative at the United Nations Office in Geneva. Both initiatives were attended by UN leaders, as well as prominent religious, intellectual, parliamentary, academic, and youth figures.
His Excellency also stressed the importance of preventive peace, which seeks to avert, at an early stage, the disasters of wars that often arise from civilizational conflicts among nations and peoples. He highlighted the MWL’s programs in promoting this peace over more than a decade.
He further reviewed the key factors that contribute to effective and impactful dialogue, while also outlining the principal reasons many dialogues fail to achieve their intended outcomes. Further highlights from His Excellency’s address will be published in due course.
