 Yesterday evening, in the presence of H.E. Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al-Issa, Secretary-General of the Muslim World League and Chairman of the Organization of Muslim Scholars, and during the High-level Week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly:
With the support of the United Nations and the participation of H.E. Mr. Miguel Moratinos, High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations; H.E. Mr. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation; H.E. Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development; and a large number of religious, intellectual, political, and academic leaders, as well as representatives of research centers interested in research on AI ethics.
With the participation of Ms. Malala Yousafzai, a leading global advocate for girls’ education, supported by the United Nations through International Malala Day, and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and her distinguished thesis on artificial intelligence.
With the attendance and participation of representatives of major AI companies in the United States, the World Bank, representatives of leading American universities, and prominent candidates for the position of United Nations Secretary-General:
The Muslim World League launched from New York the event AI for Everyone: Faith, Human Dignity and Artificial Intelligence.
The event focused on the importance of diverse international participation in addressing AI ethics, including the religious and civilizational dimensions and their shared ethical foundations, which represent an important area of research on these ethics, entrusted internationally to the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC).
This initially includes content that supports or incites hatred, violence, and clashes between civilizations, driven by religious, intellectual, and other ideological motives. Technology companies have highlighted these issues through reports they receive about shortcomings in content in relation to the beliefs of many users, and are keen to address the agreed-upon shortcomings under a United Nations framework.
Accordingly, the preliminary recommendation emerging from some of the opening remarks and the subsequent dialogue sessions emphasized the importance of tasking UNAOC with developing an Alliance of Civilizations Code of Ethics for Artificial Intelligence.
The recommendation included forming a committee for this purpose, led by UNAOC and comprising a diverse range of religious leaders, experts in intellectual, educational, and legislative matters, and representatives of technology companies, to reach a UN-based consensus on this matter.
Through its High Representative, Mr. Miguel Moratinos, UNAOC expressed its full readiness to undertake this task, and the participants thanked H.E. for his positive response.
The MWL Secretary-General announced that the MWL would launch an AI laboratory in cooperation with technology companies to develop programs benefiting religious, educational, and humanitarian institutions connected with religious affairs.
He also announced that work would be undertaken on the automation of a number of Islamic and Arabic sources and books to make them available to AI companies, with due regard for intellectual property rights.
He further announced the establishment of a dedicated unit to monitor and correct translation errors. Major errors have been identified in translations of a number of Islamic texts and related Islamic sciences, giving rise to meanings that bear no relation to the truth and resulting in profoundly mistaken perceptions and convictions.
